51 HILLS ROAD
(2013-2015)
Soft & hard landscape design
RIBA East Award 2016
Client: Jesus College, Cambridge
With: Gort Scott architects
Courtyard design for Gort Scott’s award winning building as part of Jesus College, featuring multi-layered planting areas; from interleaved paving and herbaceous planting at ground level to raised seating
planters to grass-roofed cycle store and courtyard trees.
A particular feature is the creeping herbaceous understorey to the new courtyard trees; swathes of Mind-your-own-business (Soleirolia soleirolii) provide lush green carpets, blurring the distinction between hard and soft and allowing the courtyard to feel rooted in its setting and character. Birch trees provide light shade through dappled canopies, and scented climbers frame the building entrance, reinforcing the layering of the garden.
